Egypt to Receive $31.5 Million Grant to Prevent Erosion of Nile Delta

Don't be in denial about it.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, Egypt is signing a $31.5 million grant agreement with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This grant comes in light of a seven-year plan to protect low-lying areas and coastal cities from risk of being flooded.

The fund will be designated to create several projects, such as a dike system and a 60-kilometre-long wall by the Delta governorates. Taha El-Erian, Minister Deputy of Water Resources and Shore Protection Affairs, reportedly said that Egypt will also be investing in the protection of all coastal areas in the Nile Delta which are in danger of the rising sea levels.

Execution of the projects have already begun, with Egypt’s Central Administration at the Shore Protection Authority building a 46-kilometre-long dike system all the way from Burullus City to Rosetta in the Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate.

Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Mohamed Abdel Atti, added that Port Said, Damietta, Dakahlia, Kafr El Sheikh and Beheira will be the most at risk from the rising sea levels. He stressed that the delta is a huge source of Egypt's gross national income, given that our economic activities revolve around agriculture, industry, tourism, and fisheries.
